Service

Unfortunately, not everyone who enjoys nature is careful about conserving it, and many trails show signs of this carelessness. We will strive to leave each trail better than we found it by at least removing any trash that we are able to retrieve. We will also look into a service project for the group as membership increases. There are also plenty of organized service opportunities to protect and preserve our natural areas.

If you know of any other volunteer opportunities, please let us know so we can include it here.

Bays Mountain - There are many opportunities for volunteering at various areas within Bays Mountain, including the farmstead museum, herpetarium, raptor center, nature trails, astronomy club, and watershed. For more information, contact the Volunteer Coordinator’s office at (423)229-9449.

Steele Creek - The Friends of Steele Creek help maintain park gardens and trails and are currently working with the Nature Center to create a park herbarium.

Roan Mountain - The Friends of Roan Mountain are working to remove exotic invasive plants; establish native, warm season grasses and wildflowers; and support the Baa-tany Goat Project.

Appalachian Trail - The Tennessee Eastman Hiking & Canoeing Club is responsible for the maintenance of the AT from Spivey Gap to Damascus. Membership is open to anyone.

Local mountain bike/hiking trails - The Northeast Tennessee Mountain Bike Association develops and maintains local trails for joint use by mountain bikers and hikers.

Cherokee National Forest - Tennessee Wild is dedicated to protecting wilderness on the Cherokee National Forest for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future generations.

Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards provide stewardship, including trail building, maintenance, and repair, to areas designated and managed as Wilderness.
